Conversation Thursday: Break Ups
How my morning started today.
(phone rings)
Friend: He’s leaving.
Me: Leaving what?
Friend: The marriage.
Me: Oh.
(and then I listened to her for over an hour)

Nephew: Titi Linda, do boys kiss each other in real life? I saw it on TV. That’s weird.
Titi Linda: Yes, sometimes they do.
Nephew: Isn’t that weird?
Titi Linda: Well, some boys like other boys and some boys like girls. And some girls like boys and other girls like girls. It’s okay.
Nephew: What do you like?
Titi Linda: I like boys.
Nephew: I like girls.
(silence)
Nephew: Why do boys like other boys?
Titi Linda: Because every person is different.
(nephew thinks)
Nephew: You’re right. People are different. You wear glasses and I don’t. I’m not weird.
Titi Linda: No you aren’t.
Nephew: Okay, boys kissing isn’t weird.
Auria here. This is a real conversation I had with my nephew when he was four years old. Four. Children are never too young to learn that everyone deserves respect.

What’s the heck is Conversation Thursday? Well, I’ve learned that I’m not a writer. I’m a dialoguist. I write dialogue first and then add the fixings. Every Thursday I post a conversation as a reminder of how people talk. It’s my hope that we learn the structure of believable dialogue and incorporate it in our storytelling. Submit your own conversations to auriacortes AT gmail DOT com and I’ll post it on this blog.

(Linda on the couch, watching TV, and hysterically crying. Ex stands at the doorway.)
Ex: What are you watching?
Linda: Of Mice and Men.
Ex: What part is playing?
Linda: The opening credits.
Ex: Opening credits? Why are you crying?
Linda: I read the book. I know what is going to happen.
(Ex leaves)

Oh pick me! Pick me! I know. It’s Linda. Why? Cuz she forgot her big sister’s birthday. Your present is on its way, Bobbi.
Happy belated birthday.
Even though it’s not Conversation Thursday, I’m posting the following exchange I had with my little sister and my brother’s answering machine.
(Linda calling Tata – her little sister)
Linda: Did you remember Bobbi’s birthday?
Tata: Yes, I had her over for lunch.
Linda: Why didn’t you remind me?
Tata: I didn’t know I had to.
Linda: Well you did.
Tata: Too bad.
Linda: Damn, I can’t believe I forgot. Now you look better than me.
Tata: That’s my plan.
Linda: You suck.
(Linda calling Manolo – her little brother)
Answering machine: Please leave a message after the tone.
Linda: Do you know that Bobbi’s birthday was yesterday?
Answering machine: <silence>
Linda: Well, I hope you called her. Cuz the rest of us remembered.
(Linda Hangs up)

Linda: Why don’t you ever tell me I’m beautiful?
Ex: You are you know.
<Linda walks out of the room and then quickly returns>
Linda: I mean thank you.
<Ex smiles>
Linda: So why am I beautiful?
<both are getting agitated>
Linda: Give me one. Just one.
Linda: My smile? That ones obvious. Give me another one.
