Conversation Thursday: Cruising

Below is a conversation Linda had with her father. English is his second language so sometimes there is a communication gap.

Linda: Papi, I got a literary agent!
Papi: That’s nice, baby hun.

Linda: You don’t know what that is, right?

Papi: No.

Linda: A literary agent is the middleman between a publishing house and me.

Papi: Oh, that’s nice. (still not getting it)

Linda: Okay, I’ll explain it again. An agent is someone who will represent my book ideas to publishing houses and negotiate a contract.

Papi: That sounds interesting. (still not getting it)

Linda: Papi, you know Tom Cruise, right?

Papi: Yes! I watch his movies.

Linda: Okay, Tom Cruise is really important. He doesn’t have time to talk to people who want him in their movies. The agent is the one who talks to the producer and then to Tom. Understand?

Papi: Oh my goodness! You’re going to be in a movie with Tom Cruise.

Linda: What? No. No.

Communication gaps are always entertaining. Papi’s funny. :-)
