Friday Night Movie: A Girl Like Me

This week’s pick isn’t a movie, but rather a documentary that recreates the “doll test” where black boys and girls are asked their perception of two dolls: one is black, the other white. The embedded video has the complete 8 minute documentary. I finished reading Of Mice and Men two days ago and began reading The Color of Water. A memoir by James McBride. He was born to a black man and a white Jewish woman. So far this memoir is TERRIFIC! I encourage everyone to read it. In the meantime, check out A Girl Like Me.

Wow, no, my post stands. How sad. I did not expect the chlidren to react that way. I saw a PBS show about a black writer speaking to children around 6 or 7 and they were very, “Why did black people hate white people ?” Both white and non-white seemed clueless. I thought, wow, finally…now…well it was 8yrs ago; oh, auria, I hope Obama wins and real change happens for African Americans. I hope they claim what white people stole from them. With all my heart.
    THX for the video.

This post happened because of Obama. Because he’s half-white, he’s the reason I’m reading The Color of Water.

Every minority community goes through the light and black skinned issue. Puerto Ricans are no exception. So I understand why the black kids chose the white doll as the good one.

I happen to be light skinned. Some of my family members are not. There’s a difference in how we are treated. I’m thankful for my light skin.

Did you know that in Asian communties it’s not skin color, but the eyes? The wider the eye the better. Some even get surgery to put in the crease above the eye. Both is so they can look more American.

It’s terrible that society has not changed its view on skin color. The teenagers in the video are brave and may change the world one day.
