Listen to the song: You not ugly. You the grace of God if us ever see it.

You don’t believe me.

Miss Celie . . . Miss Celie, look here. Look at yourself.
I’ve always been the kind of gal

That had a lot to say

I says the things that’s on my mind

Too dumb to shy away

But you hush my mouth and still me

With a song I’ve never heard

I guess that means that you are just

Too beautiful for words

I’ve seen this life from high and low

And all that’s in between

I danced with dukes, crooned with counts,

Been courted like a queen

But when I see what’s in your heart,

All the rest is blurred

The grace you bring into this world’s

Too beautiful for words

You hide your head under your wing
Just like a little bird
Oh, don’t you know you’re beautiful,

Too Beautiful for words?

Celie, You’re too beautiful for words.

Thank you for posting this. This is my first time ever hearing this song, It really is quite lovely. Did you ever see the play?

Yes, I have seen the show. I catch a Broadway show about once a month.

I flew my sister up from Florida for the weekend just to watch the show. It’s her favorite movie and book.

This is the best movie ever!! The bond between the sisters, the power of support, overcoming your fears and insecurities… It’s amazing.

Whats truly amazing here is that Celie didnt kill that man. Weve all had something or other happen to us in our lives, but Celie took the cake. The mental and physical torture that woman went through wouldve left me in a straight jacket playing with my bottom lip. Celie was a strong woman mostly cause she refrained from kiling that man. Now thats self control.

Cami, I totally agree. I think in the end she made the right choice.

In the book, Albert does make a complete transformation. The movie and the Broadway musical show a glimpse of his growth, but neither delves into it too much.

Here’s a quick fun fact. Women receive a sentence of twenty five years when they kill their abuser. Men receive a sentence of fifteen years for killing a wife/girlfriend (the murders are usually out of anger or jealousy).
